Dark matter is a term in astrophysics for matter that does not emit, or reflect, enough electromagnetic radiation to be detected directly. Essentially, the term dark matter refers to the hitherto unidentified component of matter that makes up most of the mass in the universe. The presence of matter can be deduced from its gravitational effect on visible matter and on light.
